Carping with Fishing Jones

August 10, 2009 By: Creekaddict Category: Carp, Fly Fishing, NJ

Saturday Morning I got to fish with Pete McDonald from Fishingjones.com. Unfortunately, Pete had to head home before the fishing seemed to warm up. I caught two and hooked three, all on different colored woolly buggers. One that I hooked looked to be about 20 pounds. As soon as he turned his head and bolted my 8lb tippet snapped, guess I had my drag set too tight. The other two fish that I actually brought to my hands were much smaller. One on a white woolly, one on a black woolly. It’s funny, last time I was there, they wouldn’t even look at the bigger flies. All they wanted was tiny nymphs. This time, I couldn’t pay them to eat a nymph. I’ve still got TONS to learn when it comes to fishing for these bastards, but I feel like I’m getting better and better every time I go.

Nice little crowd watching the strange fella catch fish out of the local pond.

  2. This guy named Rich. He watched me fish for about an hour. He saw the big one snap me off as he was walking by me and decided to stay and watch I guess. Lucky for me though. Gotta love those hero shots.

  3. The more blogs I come across regarding carp on the fly just makes me more and more envious of you lot in the States. We just don’t get them here in Finland. Well we do, but they are Crucian carp and only reach 2-3lbs and found some 500km away from where I am situated.Another great blog though!

  4. Thanks for stopping by, Simon! The carp are definitely plentiful here. You’d be surprised how under pressured they are as game fish here.

  5. Whenever I am fighting a carp at the local pond, I draw the same type of crowd. Never Fails…the kids always get the most excited because they have no idea there are fish the size of their legs lurking under the glare only 10 ft away. Sweet blog!

  6. Thanks for stopping by, and adding me to the blogroll at This River is Wild! Every time a kid watches me pull in a fish, I kind of hope he begs his parents to get him a rod and tech him to do the same!
