The Pequest Midge
In the spirit of winter fishing I’ve decided to share with you guys the Pequest Midge. Chris first tied this fly last winter. For whatever reason, this red midge catches their eye and those heavily pressured fish can’t help but eat it. Don’t let the name fool you though, I’ve caught fish in many different rivers with it. The other great quality of this fly is that it takes only a minute to tie and its no big deal when you lose them. If you guys are headed to the Pequest makes sure to tie up some of these and give those fish at the sluiceway hell!
Material list:
TMC 2488 size 18 and 20
1.5mm Tungsten copper bead available from www.wflies.com
Small red copper wire (extra small would be best, but I only had small)
UTC 70 red thread
Place the beaded hook in the vise.
Start the thread behind the bead.
Tie the thread half way down the bend of the hook and trim the tag.
Tie the wire in to the bend of the hook.
Build a tapered body using the thread.
Rib the fly with the copper wire.
Tie off the copper wire rib and cut the wire. (You can see the “tag” from the wire, I should have broke the wire)

Didn’t the boss have a baby?? Let’s see the pictures of that one!! I heard it was 21 inches and 10 pounds. River Louis must have been eating well
1No joke. This kid is a little pig. Can’t wait to put him on his first fish!
2Nice one, Nick.
3Been doing some variations on the classic midge theme…

You can try the dubbing brush for the thorax, to me it seems like it would be a small area to use a brush but let me know how it works for you. If it ends up being to bulky for you try cutting some of the spikey guard hairs from the mask and touch dubbing them on to the thread. The other option is SLF squirrel dubbing which is my favorite for the thorax on my czech nymphs.
4ICW,
Thanks for the tip! I too love the SLF squirrel and it is the only dubbing I use on the thorax of my czech nymphs. Will let you know how it works out.
5This midge works! I caught a nice 16″ rainbow on this fly at the Peaquest yesterday.
6We wouldn’t steer you wrong my friend! Glad it put some trout in your net. If you get some pictures with it in a fish’s mouth, I’d love to see em!
7Sorry, no pictures of this one but I’ll try to remember next time. I will say it was caught on the size 18 trailed behind a size 12 BH Prince. Drifted it under a large log in only about 12″ of water. When I went to swing it out the fish was on! The only difference is I tied mine with a tiny pinch of peacock ice dub behind the bead. Thanks for the pattern and saving my day.
8I bet it looks killer with that ice dub. I’ve tied them like that with a black bead and some of the Jan Siman peacock dubbing, they look like killers.
