Thread Frenchie

December 15, 2009 By: BlackLabel Category: European Nymphing, Flies, Nick

This is the ultimate dropper fly in your Euro nymphing team of flies. There are several variations of this fly, some use pheasant tail for the tails and body, others use dubbing for the body. They all work. The original that is available commercially from places like Cabela’s use the pheasant tail body (Search Egan’s Frenchie). My variation uses Coq De Leon for the tails and thread for the body. Which ever one you use, don’t be fooled by its simplicity. The fish can’t stand to let this one go by.

Materials:
Grip 11011BL size 18 shown (Tie these in sizes 16-20. The TMC 2499SPBL is also a great hook to use.)
2.0mm copper Tungsten bead (Gold beads also work very well. Available at the best price from our friends at Wflies.com. Use creekaddict for your coupon code and receive free shipping.)
XS copper wire
8/0 dark brown Uni thread (Change the thread color to suit your needs. Tan and olive are very good producers)
6/0 fluorescent pink thread (Try the hot spot in all colors from fluorescent orange to plain green)
Coq De Leon dark speckled (Use light speckled on light colored flies)

Slide bead on hook and place hook in vise.

Start thread at eye of hook and advance thread to rear of hook.

Tie in 6-8 Coq De Leon fibers.

Trim fibers and tie in copper wire rib.

Build a tapered body, leaving room at the front of the fly.

Rib the body and tie off rib.

Break off the copper wire and whip finish.

Start your hot spot thread in the space you left at the front of the fly.

Trim your tag and build up a hot spot then whip finish.

Tan with light speckled tails and a red hot spot tied on a size 18 2499

Red hot spot dark brown body

Yellow hot spot dark brown body 2499 hook

Good luck!

Nice fly! I have a few very similar, minus the Coq De Leon tail. I’ll have to add one!
