Vladi Worm

December 09, 2009 By: BlackLabel Category: Flies

There are already a few tutorials out there on this fly but I do mine a little different. You guys get a special tip on how to tie these on the super bad ass Skalka streamer hook.

Materials:
Skalka streamer hooks (size 6)
.020 lead for thinner lighter flies or .030 lead for thicker heavier flies
Uni Big Fly Thread Pink
Danville 6/0 Fluorescent Pink
Maxima Chameleon 3lb (5x)
Pink Condom
Jan Siman Magic Shrimp Foil Fluorescent Pink
Special Tools:
Needle Nose Pliers
Butane Torch
Glass of water (also helps to put out fires)

You can get some of these materials at Wflies.com. If you order from them, make sure to use the coupon code “creekaddict” for free shipping on any order over $10.00.

Place the hook in the vise.

Heat the hook shank with a torch.

Bend the hook with needle nose pliers. (This hook can’t be bent without heating) Remove hook from vise and dip in glass of water to cool.

Place the hook back in the vise and add lead to the area you just bent. (.020 in picture)

Start your Big Fly thread at the eye of the hook.

Cover the lead and build an even tapered body.

At the eye of the hook start your 6/0 thread.

Wrap your 6/0 thread to the rear of the hook covering your Big Fly thread.

Trim your Big Fly thread and cut your 6/0 tag. Advance your thread back to the eye.

Tie in your Maxima at the eye.

Tie your Maxima down keeping it strait along the back of the fly.

Tie in about an 1/8 inch of condom. Don’t tie the condom in all the way at the rear of the hook or it will be difficult to form a nice taper. Advance your thread to the eye.

Wrap the condom to the eye of the hook. Keep steady pressure the whole time. Tie down with a single thread wrap at the eye.

Wrap the condom to the rear of the hook pulling it very tight. This time wrap back and cover the thread you left exposed before.

Tie in a strip of Magic Shrimp Foil along the back of the hook.

Tie off the Shrimp Foil and trim any extra.

Wrap the condom to the eye of the hook stretching the condom very thinly. Tie off the condom and trim the extra.

Wrap your Maxima rib to the eye and tie it off.

Trim your Maxima and whip finish the fly.

Enjoy!

Nice one Nick! For those that don’t have access to a blowtorch, or just have pyromaniacal tendencies, another option is the Daiichi 1870 Swimming Larvae hooks.
    Great tutorial!

Yes the Daiichi hook is a good one and available from our friends at wflies.com. For the ones I sell I use a TMC 300 and just bend it into shape. The TMC 300 can be bent with no problems and no heat. If you haven’t tried the Skalka streamer hook though you should. The Vladi worms are such a large fly that a barbed hook can do some damage to a fish and the Skalka streamer hook keeps them pinned on pretty darn good.

Cool. Will do! I always crimp and file the barb off on my bigger hooks. Is there nothing out there a Dremel can’t fix?

Nice! i always worndered how a dremel would work for taking barbs off.

Use one of the small grinding stones. They rip right through that barb!!
