Hiking and Fishing

April 27, 2009 By: Creekaddict Category: NY, Ramapo, Trout

The wife, father-in-law and I took a hike into Harriman state park to enjoy the gorgeous weather on Sunday. I got a little bit of fishing in on Island Pond but only caught a baby sunny. How embarrassing.

Welcome to my backyard.

After I got home, drank some beer, ate some Domino’s and took a shower, I decided I had to go get my creek fix before calling it a night. I fished the Ramapo for about a half hour and caught one stocker and a bunch of creek chubs. On my walk out to the river I snuck up on a small group of deer. I surprised the hell out of them I guess, because they just stood there frozen for about a minute.

Friday Night Fun

April 24, 2009 By: Creekaddict Category: Fly Fishing, NY, Ramapo, Trout

Little Ramapo trout with sore lips.

First yellow perch of the year. There are some big ones in the Ramapo. Both fish took a brown and green czech nymph.

More Little Stockers

April 23, 2009 By: Creekaddict Category: Fly Fishing, NY, Ramapo, Trout

I took two fish before it started pouring down rain last night. One took a Czech nymph with a bright pink hot spot, the other took a green and yellow woven nymph. I’m sure you guys are tired of seeing these cookie cutter NY stockers by now. Unfortunately for you, as long as I can come home from work and catch these dinkers in my back yard, I’m going to continue to post about it.

Ramapo Still Fishing Nicely

April 22, 2009 By: Creekaddict Category: Fly Fishing, NY, Ramapo, Trout

It’s good that the bait guys haven’t even made a dent in the stocked trout population this year. I pulled a few out last night on nymphs. This was the ugliest of the bunch. His lips looked pretty sore.

Gotta love catch and release!

After Work at The Ramapo

April 17, 2009 By: Creekaddict Category: Fly Fishing, NY, Ramapo, Trout

Fly of the night was a size 16 tungsten bead head biot nymph. The ‘bows I caught tonight were all really colorful. I saw one other fisherman out tonight, and he left after about 20 minutes when he couldn’t catch any fish.

Really good looking 1 year stocker.

Decent little brown. You can really feel the fish on the new 10′ 3wt. I took this guy out of the head of some riffles. He took the biot nymph as well.

The view before I decided to head home. All those little white specs are midges coming off the water. I got out the Thomas and Thomas before I left and threw a dry for about 5 minutes with no luck.

New Rod Rituals

April 16, 2009 By: Creekaddict Category: Fly Fishing, NY, Ramapo, Trout

Just got my new 10′ 3wt Grey’s Streamflex in the mail today. I actually bought this rod a little over two months ago, and have been patiently waiting for it to be restocked by the supplier.   You can imagine my excitement when I finally got home and actually got the rod on the water.

The rod has a wonderful action for euro nymphing.   The soft tip is great for detecting strikes and setting the hook into some trout face.   For three hundred bones, this is a great buy.  If you’re looking for a dedicated euro nymphing rod in the $300 range, this rod is it.   Although I only netted a few trout tonight, it was easy to see the vast improvement with line control when throwing 30 foot leaders.   I may even look at getting an 11 footer eventually, but right now, this new toy should keep me happy. The finish and hardware on this rod are decent, but what do you expect for 300 bucks. The feel and fishability are what you get rods for, and this rod excels in both categories.
