Tiorati Brook & Ramapo, Skunked

September 14, 2008 By: creekaddict Category: Fly Fishing, Hiking, NY, Ramapo, Tiorati

Went to Harriman state park today to have a look at Tiorati Brook, a cold-water, state-stocked brook. The brook looked promising, but no fish were spotted. Next time I go to Tiorati I’m going to try to find a way to enter the stream in the town of Stony Brook; I hear this is where the bigger trout can be found.

Got a picture of my wife trying to cool down in a little pool in the brook. You can see how thick the fog was this morning.

My wife caught me on camera catching some baby fish on the Ramapo. Not Cool.

Alicia lost her balance in the river when we were about to leave and fell in the water, she put her arms straight out in the water like she was about to start swimming or something. Needless to say, she didn’t end up swimming very far, and her neoprene waders were filled up with water. I had to laugh. This is the second time it has happened this month. I think we might need to think about getting a wading staff for her in the near future.

All in all, I think Cali probably had the most fun today.

White Mountains, NH

Pretty fun trip, caught a lot of fish. Nothing too big but still a lot of fun. I woke up every day at 5 and had two different rivers all to my self. I didn’t see another person on the river until i was on my way out all three days.

Hiked about 4 miles up the Ellis River and caught some good looking brookies on ants. So many ants in the air you couldn’t breath without eating a couple. The fish were small but plentiful.
exhibit a:

You can’t tell from the pictures, but the water was so clear you could see straight to the bottom in 8 ft of water.

The next two days I hiked into a river called the Saco River. again, I saw people as I was going in, and as i was leaving. After about 500 yards from the parking at the road the river was all mine. Caught two little browns and a bunch of rainbows about 6 miles down river. Caught the browns on tan cadis flies, and the rainbows in a deep pool with sinking line and a woolly bugger. Small fish, but they were plentiful.

These aren’t all the fish, but you get the idea.
The water here was pristine. I can’t wait to go back.

Island Pond, Harriman State Park

August 23, 2008 By: creekaddict Category: Hiking, NY

Cali(the dog), my wife, and I decided to take a hike up to Island Pond this past weekend. She wanted to go for exercise and adventure, I wanted to go to scope out the water. I brought a rod with me, but no float tube. When I got to the pond, small brook trout were rising on the water far enough out to be safe from a cast(my casts anyways) and close enough to entice me. The place is beautiful, and I can’t wait to make another hike in and actually get into some fish!
